The team at Precision Driven Health were delighted to win the prestigious Research & Business Partnership Award at the KiwiNet (Kiwi Innovation Network) awards recently.
The award recognises an outstanding example of a deeply embedded working relationship between a research organisation and business that delivers significant commercial value for New Zealand.
PDH is a seven-year NZ$38m research partnership aimed at improving health outcomes through data science, established in March 2016. It is co-founded by Orion Health, Waitemata District Health Board and the University of Auckland. The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment provides $14m in funding, with the industry funding the remaining $24m. More commercial partners, healthcare providers and academic institutions are expected to join over time.
The initiative positions New Zealand at the forefront of the global transformation in healthcare known as precision medicine or personalised medicine. Precision medicine is enabled when all information about an individual – including his or her genetic and social profile – is available as part of an electronic health record (EHR), which can be accessed by clinicians in real time.

Kiwinet Judges commented: “Precision Driven Health is a deep and sophisticated research partnership between three large, complex organisations. There is clear evidence of collaborative research and development with a strong focus on delivering better health outcomes and commercial benefits at speed. The judges were impressed by the co-development and how the partners worked together on problem definition and solution. Precision Driven Health is addressing a broad range of health problems – that will positively impact a great number of people.”
Kate Reid (Orion Health), Dr Robyn Whittaker (Waitemata District Health Board) and Professor Gill Dobbie (University of Auckland) represented the partnership in a presentation and Q&A with industry judges. Competition was fierce and the judges’ questions weren’t easy, but Kate, Robyn, and Gill represented the partnership’s goals and activities superbly, resulting in the win.
We are very proud of the whole PDH team!
